I run a private mail sending service for US prisons, I print and deliver mail according to clients requirement. It was a win-win situation for both me and my customers as I was about to help them for a genuine sitation and they were happy because they could avoid the hassle of goint through an unknown process themselves, but not with so much scanning it's impossible to send
This simply seems like one more way to 'tax' the incarcerated and their extended contacts, serving to further distance them form society and capture one more aspect of communication along the same lines as operating cell IMSI-catcher. While there may be arguably legitimate reasoning behind this, there is another layer of extractive commerce under the cover of that legitimate reason... see the high cost per minute for phone calls and the effective monopoly for those calls.

Here is a blog about it by prison assist. This issue seems to affect many but the question remains why 2026 is seeing such a dramatic scanning in the prisons.
