Usually there is a person, that could probably be replaced with a old Fischer price recorder loaded with a pre-recorded sequence of bad idea(s), running such an outfit, but yeah there usually one person behind everything...

It seems to me like someone would have at least _tried_ to have a CEO agent talk to a board of directors of agents, have a marketing department of agents try to find market fit for a product, etc. has this been done?

I am not a corporate lawyer but AFAIK a CEO and CFO which can be the same person must be a real human for numerous legal responsibilities including those related to the board. The board members also have to be humans. I agree with jalapenos that it would be a fun movie. Perhaps M3GAN 3.1

Would be a good plot for a movie: an AI that's built a company by itself through stolen identity, anonymous companies and trusts, and impersonating a human on video calls etc.

"Has anyone ever actually seen him in person?"

Starts acquiring other companies and some auditor protagonist eventually discovers it and that it's controlling a third of the economy or something.
