First it was developers, now AI is coming for doctors

I actually just saved a meme to my phone today that I thought was hilarious.

The patient is sitting on the operating table with a speech bubble: "But why is the scar on the left if the appendix is on the right?"

The ChatGPT doctor: "You're absolutely right! Let me try that one more time."

Haha that’s a good one But to be fair, humans mess up too — sometimes spectacularly! It’d actually be really cool to see a proper “human vs AI” comparison, not just on accuracy but on how often each one slips up. Honestly, I think the real win is when both work together — human intuition mixed with AI precision. That combo might just be the least mistake-prone team we’ve ever had.

AI comically failed at replacing developers, and already famously failed at replacing doctors years ago (remember IBM's Watson?)

Fair point — Watson definitely overpromised back then! As a developer, though, I’ve reached the stage where I do think AI could replace me someday… I’m just not sure what to do with it yet . But you’re right — the difference now is scale. More data, more context, and way more computational power. Accuracy will only keep improving, and when that happens, human + AI might finally hit that sweet spot of reliability.

Agreed - human + AI is a very productive pairing.

Well then, sounds like doctors should be pretty safe then.

Haha, honestly, as a developer, I don’t really think about “job security” or being safe in the AI era — I’m more focused on how to embrace AI to become a better software developer. My dark side, though, whispers that once we hit full automation, none of this will matter… but hey, at that point, nothing will matter anyway — society as we know it will be completely redefined!

What’s funny is how many doctors I’ve met think they’re immune to all this. They trust their safety net a bit too much. But when you think about it, most of what they do is listen to complaints, gather subjective and objective data, and reason through it — exactly the kind of stuff AI can do… only faster, cheaper, and probably with better bedside manners soon!
